The Big Texan Steak Ranch
in Amarillo, Texas

No visit to the Texas panhandle would be complete
without a stop at the "Big Texan" for a delicious steak.
If you are taking I-40 going west you can't miss it.
It will be on the right side of the road.
I would recommend the Filet Mignon- it's a bargain at
less than $20.00 as of April 2000.

Does this look great- or what!

The dining room is decorated with lots of stuffed
(used to be alive type) animals and mementos from the Old West.
The help is friendly and it's a great experience.

Depending on the time of the day and the day of the week that you visit
it can be a very busy place. The wait for your food does not seem long
as there is so much to look at.

If you're lucky someone will be trying to eat the free 72 oz. steak dinner.
There is a catch to getting the meal free.
You have to eat ALL of it in less than 1 hour.

On our last visit a young man was trying his best to get that meal free.
He gave up when there were about 2 minutes left.
Our waitress told us that 1 in 5 people are able to eat all of that food.

As you can see by the pictures the chef is very busy.

It's really interesting to watch him as he puts the steaks on the grill and prepares the meals.

Don't forget to bring your camera. Picture taking is encouraged!

If you would like to find out more before you visit in person- visit on-line, first.

Across the parking lot from the "Steak Ranch" is the "Big Texan Motel".

On the day of our visit we were able to get a room without reservations-
but they do recommend that you call ahead.

In the mornings they serve free coffee and donuts etc. in their lobby.
The guy in the picture is my husband Don enjoying that first cup of coffee
to try to wake up and hit the road again.

We met a really nice man who was attending a show they were having in the area.
He was selling belt buckles that he made from bull horns.

By the way- the background on this page is from a photo I took
of the headboard of our bed at the "Big Texan Motel".

Pretty neat- isn't it!
