Monument Valley

Monument Valley is famous all over the world.
Many movies were filmed at least in part in that beautiful setting.
The helicopter in "Airwolf" with Ernest Borgnine
came out of one of the huge rock formations in Monument Valley.
You will also recognize the setting from "Back to the Future".

Two of the most famous formations are
"Left Mitten" and "Right Mitten"
I never know which is which.
Does anyone?

It's best to take a tour through Monument Valley,
as the terrain is "a bit rough".

There are no paved roads, and unless you like to go four- wheeling
the drive is not for you.

We found it best to hire one of the Navajo Guides.
They can be found by the Visitor's Center.

There is still some farming going on in the valley,
and you may run across a stray cow or two.

The colors in Monument Valley are mostly reds.
As you are walking from your Guides' car to the formations,
your shoes will be covered with red dust.
I still have some in the soles of my sandals.

On your tour you will be amazed by the size of everything surrounding you.
our guide gave us lots of time to explore everything.
He has lived in Monument Valley all his life,
and knows it like the back of his hand.

Some Navajo spread blankets on the ground
and sell jewelry and other handmade items.

The Visitor's Center sells pins and earrings.
On the way to the Visitor's Center you will pass a row of stands.
You can purchase all kinds of things there.
I have seen some similar items sell for twice as much elsewhere.

I purchased beautiful hand- beaded earrings for $ 14.00.
I saw the exact same ones in a catalog for $42.00.
It definitely pays to purchase there so the artist can keep all the profit.
You both win that way!

Thank you for coming with me on this trip.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
