-The Apache Trail-
A trip on the Apache Trail.
Apache Junction to Roosevelt Dam

- -Do it in a Jeep!- -
If I have to explain- you won't understand!

The scenery is beautiful. Every turn brings new surprises.

As we were driving we wondered
how the early settlers were able to travel here.

Small paths lead from the paved road
and the Trail is surrounded by mountains.

Only small shrubs and cacti are able to survive.
and the drop- offs are very steep!

The bright azure sky forms a beautiful backdrop
for the pink color of the rock
while two Saguaro are standing guard.

Looking ahead. We have to go there?
That's a tight turn ahead!

More tight turns- don't miss the road!
This is where the fun begins!

Small shrubs hanging on tight.

That sign really meant it! This is a dirt road!
Unfortunately- when we drove the Apache Trail
in April 2000, it had all been paved.
The off- road driving on a dirt road was soooo much more fun!

One lane bridge ahead. Make sure no one is coming.
Looking back to where we've been. It's really dusty!

Saguaros with many arms.
They must be over 100 years old.

The lake is on the left. We're almost at Roosevelt Dam.
A few more bumps on and bends in the road and we'll be there.

I can't believe how blue that water is.
We made it to Roosevelt Dam!

Well- we survived a long dusty drive- but it was FUN!

We did not take any pictures at Tortilla Flat on that trip.
When we returned in April 2000 we took a few.

Tortilla Flat, Arizona is a famous old authentic stagecoach stop.
It is nestled in the midst of the Superstition Wilderness.
Only six people live at Tortilla Flat,
one of the last remnants of the Old West.

The town has a restaurant, US Post Office,
souvenier and gift shop, ice cream store
and a convenience store.
It is located 18 miles NE of Apache Junction on Hwy 88.

Here is the carved Indian.
He resides in front of the General Store.
Come visit him sometime!
He'll be waiting for you!
